Rong: this is the 2014 dodge durango r/t . The durango certainly drives well. Its brakes are smooth and powerful, belying its hulking bodywork. The ride is equally smooth and composed. And while i drove the pentastar v6 durango a few weeks ago, with the understanding that its 290 horsepower is more than adequate to move such mass -- dip into the throttle, feel the added bonus of 70 more hp, hear that dampened rumble from across two rows of easily-folding captain's chairs, and, yeah, that's pretty fun. We're more than ok with this. The interior is also new, and while it's much improved and straightforward, strange touches still abound on the technology front. Accelerate hard enough and the digital speedometer fails to keep up. Uconnect works smoothly and quickly, but its center screen is full of clutter and obfuscation and red that washes over everything like that one scene in “the shining.”and therein lies the crux of dodge's entire philosophy. It's amusing to see the company try to appeal to the practical-minded shopper with touts of fuel efficiency, safety, and rear-seat dvd entertainment systems when, in the end, they're really just a bunch of hooligans. This is a crossover with a limited appeal, but that's by design -- literally and figuratively. I can see who the durango, especially in r/t or chrome-laden citadel guise, would appeal to. Dads who sign up their sons for football. Alpha dads who get in shouting matches with other alpha dads at hockey rinks. Tim allen's character on “home improvement.” that's right, sir. Take him to the mall at christmas to buy a bb gun, glare at the mall santa the entire time. Then, go home in a dodge durango r/t. Those 20-inch “hyper black aluminum” wheels are downright sinister. Then get in and disappear in the black interior with red “r/t” stitching. Step on the gas and listen to the big, throaty roar and feel the big power. This is a real hot rod. It takes a lot of power to move that much metal, 360 hp to be exact. It feels and sounds like more. Plus, durango features 6,200lbs (v6) or 7,400lbs (v8) towing capacity and available awd. It includes an array of airbags, including side-curtain airbags that help protect outboard occupants in all three rows, electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, and traction control.
